The Budapest Model

During the first democratic local elections in 1990 I was elected Mayor of Budapest by a large majority of the City Parliament, after which I was re-elected four times. I have already written a book entitled Budapest Marathon about this period, which is aimed at a general audience, relating the history of Hungary’s regime change through the eyes of the Mayor. At NIAS I will be writing a second book, “The Budapest Model”, which will give an insight into the history of regime change in the capital of Hungary. I intend to give a deeper analysis focusing on a set of tools in the field of urban politics and urban policy like strategic planning, targeted system of Housing-related Cost Allowances, crime prevention concept etc. enabling the city leadership to implement reforms in Budapest between 1990 and 2010. This analysis will be especially relevant to experts in urban planning and city policy.
