Henri Claessen, born in Wormerveer, the Netherlands, in 1930. Ph.D. from the University of Amsterdam. Associate Professor of Social Anthropology at Leiden University.

Apart from some book reviews and papers on legitimisation in early states, my main task was the preparation and editing of a volume on the evolution of political organization.
