Maria Bogucka, born in Warsaw, Poland, in 1929. Professor of History at the Polish Academy of Sciences, Warsaw.

Fellow (1 February 1987 – 31 July 1988)

During my six-months stay I worked mostly on the Renaissance culture trying to establish a European context of the Polish Renaissance. I focused especially on the problems of chronology/shift between Poland and the other countries, of disruption and continuation in the social and cultural development, of originality and/or dependence on foreign inspirations as well as on problems of social mentality/attitude toward time and space, toward life and death; ideals and knowledge of the world; gap between learned and popular culture.
