John Bastin, born in Melbourne, Australia, in 1927. Ph.D. from Leiden University and the University of Oxford, Reader in the Modern History of Southeast Asia at the University of London.

Fellow (1 September 1971 – 31 July 1972)

The editing of the letters and a journal (dated 1815, Java) by Dr. Joseph Arnold, the British naturalist who discovered the giant flower, Rafflesia-Arnoldi, in Sumatra. The preparation of the letters of Sir Stamford Raffles to his mother for publication in addition to completing the descriptive catalogue of the Raffles Drawings in the India Office Library, London.
