Klaus Bade, born in Sierentz, Alsace Lorraine, France, in 1944. Ph.D. from the Universität Erlangen, Nürnberg. Professor of Modern and Contemporary History at the University of Erlangen and Director of the Institute for Migration Research and Intercultural Studies (IMIS) at the Universität Osnabrück.

Fellow (1 September 1996 – 31 January 1997)

The main intention of my half year stay at NIAS was the further preparation of a book entitled Continent on the Move. It aims at a synthesis on the history of migrations from, within and into Europe from the early modern period up to the end of the 20th century.

At NIAS I essentially reworked and revised the basic conception of the book making extensive use of interdisciplinary and comparative approaches and of discussions with colleagues from the Netherlands and other fellows at the Institute. The result is a stable basis for my further research and writing. I drafted several chapters while for others I still need more time for several research trips which I will absolve from during the next half year. I hope to finish the manuscript in spring 1998.

Besides this main task during my stay at NIAS I was able to give a final check before printing to several books from two German book series (Studien zur Historischen Migrationsforschung” and “Schriften des Instituts für Migrationsforschung und Interkulturelle Studien) which I am editor and co-editor of.
