My research at NIAS was concerned with two projects. The first, carried out in conjunction with Paul Alexander, was an investigation of the economy of Kebumen in Central Java around the turn of the century. Our study emphasised the development of market relationships giving considerable attention to the unintended consequences of the development policies of the colonial State. My second project was an analysis of social and demographic change among the Lahanan of Central Borneo.
