The Supernormal

NIAS Seminar

Artist-in-residence Arnold Hoogerwerf discusses the effects of Niko Tinbergen’s concept of the super normal stimulus on human behaviour in general, and more specifically, on the implications of this kind of scientific knowledge on art, art theory and art education.

About the Seminar

In this seminar, Arnold Hoogerwerf elaborates on the structure of his project, his role in it and the plans for the near future.

He will show and discuss examples of supernormal stimuli and also of scientists that are referring to the work of Tinbergen in their attempt to shine more light on the evolutionary roots of art and the aesthetic experience.

Finally, Hoogerwerf will discuss the main backstory of the project, namely the idea of consilience, interdisciplinarity and the divide between the natural sciences and the humanities. If culture increasingly becomes an aspect of nature, how will this affect the arts of the 21st century?
