Mental Health and/or Illness: The Good, the Bad and the Complex

NIAS Seminar

Psychiatrist Hanneke Wigman will discuss the application of network theory to psychopathology to gain new insights in clinical characteristics and symptom interactions in mental health patients.

About the Seminar

During Wigman’s Fellowship at NIAS during the past three months, she has been working on a first draft of an application for a Vidi grant (Dutch competition) and an ERC Starting grant (European competition). In this seminar, she will present the ideas that she has developed during this period and the first plans for her research questions.

Wigman wants to explore the merging of two currently influential ideas in psychiatric research: first, the idea that mental health and mental illness are two correlated but separate dimensions, and second, the idea that psychopathology develops gradually (instead of being an all-or-nothing phenomenon). This leads her to formulate a hypothesis of mental balance as a potentially interesting central construct in psychological and psychiatric research.

About NIAS Seminars

NIAS Seminars are aimed to stimulate scientific cross-pollination within the NIAS academic community. Attendance is by invitation only.
