About the Seminar
This NIAS seminar focuses on the dark side of memory and its counterpart: forgetting. We will study both modern approaches to “forgetting” (e.g. in Sociology) and Greek and Latin texts, mostly from the first century CE. Which forms of forgetting do these texts depict and how do they do it? Which strategies do they apply to let certain pieces of knowledge slip into oblivion? We will discuss both a definition of “forgetting” and a new typology of forms forgetting that help to analyse (ancient) texts.
Discussant: Prof.dr. Ineke Sluiter
