The NIAS Conference 2023 takes place from 19-21 April 2023 in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. It will be hybrid, allowing on site and online participation.
With global warming soaring, we are keen to try as much as we can to contribute to a carbon neutral framework for the conference. To this end, the conference will be held in a completely hybrid form, on a platform that allows for particularly exciting ways of participating online. We would encourage everyone to consider their environmental responsibilities when registering for the conference, and to prioritize traveling by train, or to join us online instead of flying to Amsterdam. NIAS will look for ways to compensate part of the price difference between train- and flight-fares within Europe, more information will be provided about this when conference tickets go on sale.
We are aware that this choice is likely to challenge the possibilities of an ‘inclusive’ conference. Yet given the costliness of air-travel and the weariness of visa-provision for those participating from beyond Europe and in particular from the so-called Global South, we think that encouraging ‘everyone’ to fly to Amsterdam would stand a small chance of actually catering to inclusiveness.
The conference will be a hybrid event. We will announce the on site locations of the conference in October 2022.
In the (unlikely) event of a new Covid-outbreak or other issue that makes in-person attendance to this conference impossible, we will inform you as soon as possible about an alternative online conference.

NIAS’ mission is to foster curiosity-driven research that pushes the traditional disciplinary boundaries and questions underlying methodological and theoretical assumptions. Each year, NIAS hosts an international, interdisciplinary group of 50 fellows who work on their independent research projects while being embedded in a thriving intellectual community.
Starting in 2021 during the 50th anniversary of NIAS, the Institute organised its first 3-day conference in Amsterdam. The NIAS Conference 2023 is the second international conference organised by NIAS.
