Bart Eeckhout, Professor of English and American Literature, discusses his research on the modernist poet Wallace Stevens.

About the Seminar

"In this seminar, I will explain how my originally planned monograph, Wallace Stevens’ World Wide Web, has now morphed into three different publication projects, two of them as a result of conferences I have decided to organize (one the week after the seminar, the other next year). The main focus will remain, however, on the monograph, with its triple division into “Stevens in the World” (3 or 4 chapters), “Worlds Composed by Stevens” (3 chapters), and “Worlds Composed after Stevens” (4 chapters).

Considering the diversity of themes and approaches I wish to combine (case studies about urban architecture, ethnicity and genealogy, the circulation of desire, ecocriticism, musical analogies, philosophical readings, and various poems and one musical setting inspired by Stevens, involving additional perspectives from intertextuality studies, queer studies, and world literature), my current search is for ways of bringing such disparate materials together without imposing a rigid framework. The primary purpose of the seminar, then, is to help me find fitting theoretical ideas about “worlds,” “worlding,” and literary studies in the age of globalization."
