The NIAS academic community is made up of researchers who have been awarded one of the various Fellowships at NIAS. A new year-group is formed each academic year and half are from the Netherlands and the other half from abroad. NIAS actively encourages Fellows from all disciplines to share, challenge and discuss ideas during academic events. Interaction between the many disciplines at NIAS leads to new insights and serves to bind each year-group.
A Fellowship at NIAS gives the researcher the freedom to explore a topic in depth without interruption or distraction. As a member of a Theme Group, there is an opportunity to work intensively with colleagues for a sustained period.
NIAS offers a range of Fellowships that vary in terms of duration, terms and conditions, criteria and the review and selection process – see below or browse the research projects of former Fellows. For information contact Esther van Duuren.
For scholars who wish to work on an individual project for 3, 5 or 10 months. These fellowships are by application - see here for details about duration, terms and conditions, criteria and the review and selection process.
For scholars who wish to work together with colleagues on a particular theme. The coordinator writes the topic proposal and all theme-group members submit NIAS Fellowship applications - see here for details about duration, terms and conditions, criteria and the review and selection process.
Note: NIAS has two theme-group fellowship programmes that are co-sponsored. The application procedure for these fellowships is different.
For scholars working in specific disciplines or research areas. NIAS cooperates with co-sponsoring partners to set up special fellowships that aim to encourage and support a particular discipline or research goal. Some co-sponsored fellowships are awarded by application but others are by nomination or invitation only. Candidates are reviewed by specially selected Advisory Boards or Jurys. Each co-sponsored fellowship has its own specific guidelines - see here for details about duration, terms and conditions, criteria and the review and selection process.
