How do factors at the macro level (e.g., retirement institution, cultural norms and values about retirement, and economic and labor market conditions), meso level (e.g., employers’ policies and practices, work context, and family and social network factors), and micro level (e.g., individual attributes, employment history, and attitudes toward retirement) influence older adults’ work and retirement decisions simultaneously and jointly?
I plan to examine the extent to which patterns of productive behavior for older adults are influenced by the institutional context, the household context, and employers’ practices. To empirically address this issue, I will use data sets, including existing contextual database (i.e., the Gender and Generations Program) and panel databases (i.e., Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe and European Union Statistics on Income and Living Conditions), as well as data from the Pension Panel Survey resulted from the new data collection effort. Specifically, I will develop and evaluate multilevel models that encompass factors at the macro-, meso-, and micro- levels to understand patterns of productive behavior for older adults who are at the end of their labor market careers.
