Decision-Making since Lisbon: Small, Medium-sized and Large Member States and Crisis Management

Research Question

How can we understand legislative bargaining in the European Union since the changes of the Lisbon Treaty came into effect?

Project Description

This project analyses, theorizes and conceptualizes decision-making in the European Union (EU), addressing changes in the dynamics of EU decision-making since the Lisbon Treaty. It analyses legislative bargaining in the European Union. This project builds on an earlier model (Schure and Verdun 2008) and seeks to test it in particular by examining the policy choices of ‘large’, ‘medium-sized’ and ‘small’ member states based on their voting power in the Council. For this project I will develop further and test the model developed in Schure and Verdun (2008) that builds on insights from Schure et al. (2007). I will analyse governance of the euro area crisis (e.g. the creation of the banking union) and examine the stance of national and EU level officials on EU decision-making.
