What are the topical artistic strategies deployed by the international ZERO movement? What role did performances, interactivity and new media play in the ZERO art practices?
The research examines the confluence of the various international ZERO artists and their shared commitment to advancing a critical and experimental new conception of art in the aftermath of World War II; by starting over at point zero, the artists aspired to arrive at a new vision for art. By relating the artistic strategies to both the historical context of 1960s (neo)avant-garde practices and todays’ focus on performance and media art, this study aims to critically frame ZERO for a new audience in the 21st century.
The research takes place in the context of a large-scale exhibition on the international ZERO network that the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, and the ZERO Foundation, Düsseldorf, are collaboratively developing (fall 2014 –fall 2015).
