MONUMENTS TO REMEMBER AND TO FORGET - LANDSCAPES OF MEMORY AND OBLIVION IN FORMER YUGOSLAVIA AND ITALY

The research I worked on during my NIAS period focuses on the processes of "re-invention" of (local and global) national and transnational narratives of memory in Serbia, Bosnia Herzegovina and Croatia. The attention of my analysis is mainly addressed to the processes of "spatialisation of memory", and takes into account some (institutional and non) places of memory, especially terror-sites and their dynamics of memory and oblivion. In particular, I consider: 1) urban terrorscapes (how war traces are treated through reconstructions in wounded cities and in what extent this transformations lead to a rewriting of the memory of the city); 2) remaking and unmaking of narratives of WWII Yugoslav monuments (how some socialist memorials are reconfigured according to nationalistic narratives); 3) conflicts of memory with regard to the building of new monuments (controversies and conflicts between different memories of recent wars). On another note, during my stay at NIAS I also worked on a theoretical survey about the notion of trace and its different conceptualization in some disciplines (semiotics, archaeology, history, geography and memory studies).
