Fellow (1 February 2013 – 30 June 2013)
I am writing a book that examines Anglo-Dutch relations around the world over the course of the seventeenth century, from the years when the English supported the Dutch in their revolt against the Habsburgs to the accession of William of Orange to the throne of England. I am especially interested in English and Dutch interactions beyond Europe. The book explores places where the English and Dutch traded, settled, cooperated, and competed in close proximity, including the spice islands of the East Indies, the trading forts of West Africa, the mid-Atlantic region of North America, and the "wild coast" of South America. At NIAS, I hope to research and draft sections of my book that directly engage the theme of my cluster, Dutch Atlantic Connections, and will focus specifically on English and Dutch interactions in Surinam/Suriname during the conflicts and upheavals of the 1660s and 1670s.
