OF INNOCENCE UNLTD. THE DUTCH CULTURAL ARCHIVE: RACE, GENDER, SEXUALITY AND CLASS

During my time at NIAS, I worked on three research projects:

  1. My proposed book "Innocence Unltd." The Dutch cultural Archive: Race, Gender, Sexuality and Class. In addition to working on the introduction to the book, I wrote two draft chapters: 1. "The Case of black Pete in neo-realist Times" (will be ch. 2 in the book) and 2. "On Dutch Homonationalism and Islamophobia" (will be ch. 6).
  2. Coordinating and editing the Dutch contribution to an online Encyclopedia on the black presence in Europe, which is located at: http://www.encyclopediaofafroeuropeanstudies.eu/ The website provides information about black populations in different European nations, importantly but not exclusively from a Humanities perspective.
  3. A new, interdisciplinary project on the figuration of "Zwarte Piet", with NIAS co-fellow social psychologist Kip Williams and communication scientist Dr. Juliette Schaafsma (University of Tilburg), in which we will describe the genealogy of this figuration and measure correlations between attitudes towards Zwarte Piet and implicit prejudices against black people.
