THE INFRASTRUCTURAL TRANSFORMATION OF EUROPE

During my stay at NIAS I primarily worked on a book, with the preliminary title "From Nature to Networks. The Infrastructural Transformation of Europe", which I am co-authoring with Per Högselius and Erik van der Vleuten. We spent rather much time at the beginning of our stay writing extensive abstracts for all chapters. After this initial planning period I focused on two of the chapters, "Common skies" and "Logistics of war". I wrote a draft of the former and an introductory case study and a detailed plan for the latter. I also prepared a Presidential Address that I gave at the Annual Conference of the Society for the History of Technology. In this address, I discussed the importance for historians of technology to contribute to studies of transnational vulnerabilities drawing experiences from my work in two of the projects in the Inventing Europe Eurocore program, "Eurocrit" and "Eurocommons".
