Per Högselius, born in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1973. Ph.D. from Lund University. Associate Professor in History of Science and Technology at the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm.

Fellow (1 September 2010 - 31 January 2011)

FROM NATURE TO NETWORKS: THE INFRASTRUCTURAL TRANSFORMATION OF EUROPE, 1850-2000

I came to NIAS for the period from September 2010 to January 2011 to work on one of the six book projects within the "Inventing Europe" theme group. The preliminary title of the book, which I co-authored together with Arne Kaijser and Erik van der Vleuten, was "From Nature to Networks: The Infrastructural Transformation of Europe, 1850-2000". The aim of my stay was to get the writing going, write a few chapters of the book and profit from interaction within the theme group so as to harmonize the work on the overall book series. My stay was divided in two periods: the first half was devoted to elaborating on detailed chapter abstracts and synopses. The second half was devoted to writing first chapters, whereby my concrete contribution was a 14,000 word manuscript for a chapter called "Fuelling Europe".
