THE LEGAL THOUGHT OF IBN HAZM AL-ZAHIRI OF CORDOBA (D. 1064 CE). A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS

During my stay at NIAS I worked simultaneously on a number of publications revolving around the Muslim theologian, legal scholar and man of letters, Ibn Hazm of Cordoba (d. 1064 CE) and the Zahiri school of law to which he belonged. This school is characterised by an insistence on an overall literal reading of the sacred sources of Islam. I gave several presentations on this topic.

Besides working on a short biography of Ibn Hazm, I wrote three chapters of a monograph dealing with the spread of the Zahiri school in al-Andalus and North Africa. A third book on which much progress was made is a volume on the life and works of Ibn Hazm, edited by Maribel Fierro (Madrid), Sabine Schmidtke (Berlin) and myself. It is expected that all three books will appear in the course of 2011. Two further books of which I am co-editor, one on inter-religious polemics, the other on rational theology, were proofread and have since been published. I furthermore completed a number of articles and encyclopedia entries on Muslim-Jewish polemics.
