ASPECTS OF REALIA IN THE WRITINGS OF JOSEPHUS - HERODIAN URBANISM

I was a member of the Josephus Research Group, which also included Professor J.W. van Henten and Professor Daniel Schwartz. We held an internal seminar every other week. I presented two papers on the inter-relations between archaeology and literary sources. On June 2-4 we held an international colloquium which we organized at NIAS, during which I presented a paper. My research was focused on three topics relating to Herodian urbanism, which emerged from my excavations at Caesarea Maritima, and my more recent study of the Second Temple: entertainment structures, the Praetoria of Caesarea, and the pre-Herodian Second Temple. I completed four articles and a detailed book review; two other articles are still in the process of being written. My research was enriched in various aspects, methodologically, and in particular, thanks to the interaction with my colleagues in the research group.
