Fellow (1 September 2007 - 30 June 2008)
The main purpose of my year at NIAS was to write a book based on the doctoral thesis I submitted at the Sorbonne in 2003. I can now say that approximately two-thirds of the manuscript is ready. In this sense, I have made a lot of progress, although, of course, I would have liked to do more. The book should be published by with Champ Vallon in early 2010 and I will begin working on an English version of the same topic next year at Yale. It is my intention to submit the manuscript to Yale University Press.
One of the reasons for the slight delay in the completion of my book is that I actively participated in a number of research activities conducted in the Netherlands. I'm involved in editing a volume on Dutch decline in the eighteenth century. I gave a paper at a conference on Foreign Policy & Ideology in early modern Europe (1650-1750) (Utrecht, January 2008). I plan to submit the written version of my paper to a leading American journal in the fall of 2008. Finally, I participated in a conference on Bernard Mandeville under the aegis of the Liberty Fund (Aix-en-Provence, March 2008. Organizer: Hans Blom).
I also took the opportunity of this wonderful year at NIAS to follow an intensive Dutch language course at the Leiden Popular University (first semester) and, in the second semester, a paleography course with Professor Judith Pollmann (University of Leiden).
