GROTIUS, TUCK AND ROMAN LAW

This year at NIAS has allowed me to complete a number of projects and to initiate others. Among those I have completed is a monograph on Thomas Hobbes, entitled "Religion, Politics and Thomas Hobbes". It will appear in the Archive des Idées Series formerly put out by Kluwer Academic Publishers and now by the German firm Springer. In addition, I have largely completed work on a contribution to the Cambridge Companion to Leviathan, edited by Patricia Springborg, to be published by Cambridge University Press early next year. I take up the question of Hobbes' theology in an essay entitled "Leviathan and Hobbes' Theological Project".

However, the most significant aspect of my stay here has been my participation in the Grotius Theme Group. I now see Grotius more clearly both as regards the development of his thought as well as his position in the development of international law. He will figure both in new courses and in new writing projects on such topics as international relations, globalisation and post-colonialism.
