FOOD MARKETS, GLOBALISATION AND TRANSNATIONAL POLITICS 1850-1970

During my five-month stay at NIAS, I began to work on a project with the provisional title "A World without Famine. Food Security and Global Governance in the twentieth Century". Inspired by recent debates on Global and World History, this project analyses the emergence of a global food system since the late nineteenth century and its economic and political consequences. It is embedded in a newly founded research programme "Globalisation as a Historical Process" that I have been directing at the University of Cologne since January 2004. This six-year programme, funded by a grant from the Volkswagen Foundation, involves a team of six to seven researchers, on both doctoral and post-doctoral levels. The overall purpose of our group is to create a deeper understanding of long-term globalisation processes and to determine how they have altered during the past two centuries. At the same time, this group aims to foster interdisciplinary cooperation between History, Economics and the Social Sciences in the widening field of Global Studies.

My stay at NIAS gave me the opportunity to reflect on some basic assumptions about the mutual interaction of international economic integration on the one hand and the emergence of new forms of global governance on the other.
