DIPLOMATIC EDITION OF DE IURE PRAEDAE

My five-month sabbatical at NIAS allowed me to collaborate closely with other Grotius specialists, in particular Jan Waszink of the University of Nijmegen and Peter Borschberg of the National University of Singapore. Together with Peter Borschberg, I did extensive research on the manuscript of De iure praedae, concentrating on its physical aspects. We looked carefully at the watermarks contained in the paper, the construction of the quires, the different types of page-numbering, the system of cross-referencing, and the multiple layers of quotations. Our findings will be presented in two co-authored articles in international, peer-reviewed journals. In addition, the book manuscript entitled "Profit and Principle: Hugo Grotius, Natural Rights Theories and the Rise of Dutch Power in the East Indies, 1595-1615", Brill Intellectual History Series (Leiden) was submitted and will appear in 2006.
