Abdelmajid Kaddouri, born in R'hamna-sud, Morocco, in 1949. Ph.D. from Université Mohammed V, Rabat. Professor of History at Université Mohammed V, Rabat.

Fellow (1 September 2002 - 30 June 2003)

During my stay at NIAS, I worked on two projects. The first was a collaborative research project with Herman Obdeijn to make an inventory of documents on relations between Morocco and Holland from the sixteenth century to the present time held in the National Archives of The Hague. The second project was individual research for my book, Histoire et Mémoires: historiographie coloniale et historiographie nationaliste [History and memoirs: colonial historiography and nationalistic historiography]. The project consisted of studying colonial historiography on the one hand and the Moroccan nationalistic historiography on the other, in order to see how the first tried to manipulate Moroccan national memoirs in order to facilitate colonialisation. In turn, Moroccan nationalistic historiography manipulated historical writing to make it more heroic.

I also worked on a bibliography (in French) concerning the colonial historiography. Furthermore, I wrote an article on three French authors: an historian, an anthropologist and an ethnographer. Finally, while working on the Arabic Manuscripts in the Library of the Leiden University, I discovered an unpublished manuscript on the Military History of Morocco consisting of 35 pages. The manuscript is dated 1885 and is an important unknown part of Moroccan history. I intend to annotate it and publish it in Morocco.
