Fellow (1 September 1997 - 30 June 1998)
The main purpose of my stay at NIAS was to make substantial progress in writing a monograph on the Amsterdam painter Gerbrand van den Eeckhout (1621-1674) who studied with Rembrandt. The book will include chapters on the complex relations and conflicts between the socio-economic working conditions of painters and their patrons in the Dutch Republic. Large parts of the book (including a catalogue of the artist's paintings and prints) are completed.
Furthermore different articles and contributions to exhibition catalogues were submitted for publication dealing with the reception of Hans Holbein's art during the seventeenth century, Rembrandt's last pupil Arent de Gelder as well as with the history of collecting self-portraits by seventeenth-century artists.
Recent research on Rembrandt has shown that the intensive study of individual artists from his circle lead to new insights regarding the master's workshop practice.
