August den Hollander

August den Hollander, born in Oosterhesselen, the Netherlands, in 1963. Ph.D. from the VU University, Amsterdam. Researcher at the Faculty of Theology of the VU University, Amsterdam.

Fellow (1 September 1997 - 30 June 1998)

  • The work of the members of the theme group helped me to acquire a better understanding of the texts I was studying. On the basis of the results of our co-operation, Ulrich Schmid and I discovered that a narrow link existed between the Middle Dutch and late-medieval Latin gospel harmonies. Especially the work he and I did together has been of great inspiration to me.
  • In November 1997, during our stay at the Vetus Latina Institut at Beuron, the Baumstark Archive, consisting of Professor Anton Baumstark's (Oriental Studies, University of Bonn) notes on small cards, was handed over to Ulrich Schmid and myself. The importance of the archive can be illustrated by the fact that it contains excerpts from a medieval Middle Dutch gospel harmony, that was lost during the Second World War. On the basis of Baumstark's notes it has become clear to us that the text of this manuscript will reveal much about the textual relationship between the Middle Dutch and Middle High German harmonies.
