Kristian Elschek, born in Bratislava, Slovak Republic, in 1956. Ph.D. from the Comenius University, Bratislava. Independent Researcher at the Archaeological Institute of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, Nitra.
Mellon Fellow (1 February 1998 - 30 June 1998)
During my study stay at NIAS as a Mellon Fellow in the first half of 1998 I wrote several articles, two studies and a book.
The first study, for the Revue des Archéologues et des Historiens d'Art of the Université Catholique de Louvain, I finished in March 1998: "The Bratislava-Gate during the Late Roman Period". The article will be published 1998/99.
The second study was prepared for a book about the Archaeometalurgy at the Middle Danube Area together with E. Sperl: Eine Eisenverhüttungswerkstatt der älteren römischen Kaiserzeit aus Bratislava-Dúbravka, archäologische und metalurgische Untersuchungen. The study will be published in Austria 1999.
The book entitled Das Bratislavaer Tor im 1.- 5. Jahrhundert will be published in Slovakia at the end 1998/beginning 1999. It was finished in June 1998. In the sites I excavated numerous Roman objects were found (coins, glass, pottery, bronze vessels, brooches, small finds etc.) which are comparable to the archaeological finds in the Netherlands and the Western Roman provinces. All the analyses allowed a more particular interpretation of the wider economical, social and historical coherences.
