Péter Róbert, born in Budapest, Hungary, in 1953. Ph.D. from Eötvös Lóránd University, Budapest. Associate Professor of Sociology at Eötvös Lóránd University.

Magyar Fellow (1 February 1997 - 30 June 1997)

During my five-month stay at NIAS, I worked as member of the nucleus "Stratification in Eastern and Western Europe in the 1990s". In accordance with my plans, I made important progress in my research in two fields.

In respect of long-term mobility processes in Hungary, my research focused on the educational attainment and labour force entry of Hungarian men and women comparing the impact of social origin and education on the beginning of their career, as well as on further intrageneration mobility of Hungarian men and the effect of social origin and education on their occupational career, for the period 1910-1992. I also studied Hungarian marriage couples and analysed wives' labour force exit and re-entry connected to childbirth as well as husbands' and wives' occupational career during the time of their marriage.

In respect of comparative stratification and mobility research in the post-communist societies, I worked on papers and book chapters comparing the emergence of private entrepreneurship and the social determination of living conditions in six countries: Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Russia and Slovakia.
