Leo van der Mey

Leo van der Mey, born in Zuidland, the Netherlands, in 1944. Ph.D. from Leiden University. Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science at Leiden University.

Fellow (1 September 1995 - 30 June 1996)

As a member of the theme group "Pacific Asia and Europe: Developing Interfaces" the thrust of my research was focused on Asia in international relations. My contribution to the theme group covered the political aspects of developing patterns of co-operation and conflict in the region.

During my stay at NIAS I was able to achieve the main task I had set for myself. I wrote two papers on Asian security, presented both at NIAS and at international conferences, which should contribute to the envisaged book of the theme group. The group hopes to publish the outcome of their research in "Dynamics in Pacific Asia" by the beginning of 1997.

In addition to the participation in the theme group, I continued my ongoing research on India-China relations and their implications for Asian security. I rewrote a paper on their diplomatic relations after the 1962 war, for publication in the co-authored book "Problems of Diplomacy", due in 1997.

On the whole, I found the NIAS experience intellectually stimulating and socially enjoyable. A model of how life in academia can be and, I would humbly submit, should be
