James Riley

James Riley, born in Raleigh, North Carolina, USA, in 1943. Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Professor of History at Indiana University, Bloomington.

Fellow (1 September 1985 - 31 July 1986)

I spent the academic year consulting insurance records and literature from several disciplines seeking to isolate a version of ill health open to quantitative assessment over time, to specify leading questions about the ways in which sickness is a distinctive event, and to draft portions of a book, called Sickness and Death, which examines relationships between ill health and mortality and investigates especially ill health episodes not resolved in death.
